Storyteller Interview Part of Special Online Events for Match Madness Fundraiser This year's "Match Madness" fundraising goal for SHESC on Thursday, March 24, is $750 to help bring Andy Offutt Irwin to area school assemblies with his unique blend of comedy, storytelling, and silly songs. Now, get an online "sneak preview" of Irwin's storytelling style before he comes to area schools and the Kansas Storytelling Festival in April! As part of the day-long fundraiser, SHESC will livestream several events on the SHESC Facebook Live page:

Volume Purchasing Catalogs Updated Last week, SHESC released updated pricing in catalogs for copy paper, card stock, light bulbs, and furnace filters. PDF catalogs are available by downloading from the links above and sending a manual purchase order to vp@smokyhill.org or through the program's online purchasing platform. Middle School Girls Invited to Learn About Women's Non-Traditional Careers in May The careers we pursue in adulthood often depend on the examples we have to look up to in our youth. For young women there have been some careers where, unfortunately, examples have been rare for too long. Smoky Hill Education Service Center is excited to invite 6th - 8th grade girls in Kansas to "They Do What?" - an opportunity for these students to spend an exciting day exploring non-traditional careers from 9:00 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4! The event will be held at SHESC in Salina - 605 E. Crawford St. - and is completely FREE to students from Smoky Hill Perkins districts! Students from other districts are also invited to attend at just $25 per student. Two adults from each attending school may also attend at no charge and lunch is included for all attendees. Middle school girls will have the opportunity to participate in interactive group activities, tour the welding program and visit with female students in the welding program at Salina Central High School, and meet successful women from small Kansas communities who are now in high-level non-traditional careers. Teaching Tragedy: Resources to Address Russia-Ukraine War in the Classroom As the largest military attack in Europe since World War II continues through a second week, your students - and maybe even your colleagues in education - almost certainly have questions. As a starting place to help you with lesson plans, classroom discussions, and project-based learning - here are free online resources related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War: Education Week - "How to Talk with Students About the Russia-Ukraine War: 5 Tips": Great "big picture" advice on how to talk about the war, including Social Emotional Learning, global perspective, and critical thinking. (Note that Education Week has limits on the number of free articles one can access.) San Diego County Office of Education - "Resources for Educators, Families to Discuss the Events in Ukraine with Students": A top-notch list of resources (mirrored as well by Albuquerque Public Schools) which includes tailored tools from Brown University, C-SPAN, CNN, the American Psychological Association, National Traumatic Stress Network and many more. The New York Times - "Lesson of the Day: 'The Invasion of Ukraine: How Russia Attacked and What Happens Next'": Using a key comprehensive coverage article, this lesson plan invites a forum for young people to react, raise questions, and converse with peers. Includes such useful and practical tools as maps, charts, historical background, question prompts, reporting project suggestions, and more. PBS - Ukraine-related video from the archives: Dozens of freely available videos and news reports related to Ukraine, both lesson plans based on current events and videos to give additional background on Ukraine and Russia. |
