Bridges Out of Poverty
Those who did not grow up in poverty may be unaware of the “hidden rules” that govern life for those in poverty. Often individuals are in survival mode. Support systems that are often taken for granted in the middle class and among the wealthy are largely nonexistent for the working class and people in poverty.
These systems include social connections and mentors, financial reserves, legal advice, emotional tools, easy transportation, child care, accessible health care and healthy food, and more.
Businesses, agencies and organizations that work with individuals from poverty can benefit from a deeper understanding of the challenges and strengths that come from living with scarcity. This can forge better partnerships and create opportunities for success.
“Bridges Out of Poverty” is a uniquely powerful tool designed for professionals. Based in part on Dr. Ruby K. Payne’s poverty research, “Bridges”reaches out to service providers and businesses whose daily work connects them with people in poverty. The program provides case studies, detailed analysis, helpful charts and exercises, and specific solutions that organizations can implement now to:
- Redesign programs to better serve clientele and staff
- Build skill sets for management to guide employees
- Upgrade training for front-line staff – such as receptionists, caseworkers and managers
- Improve treatment outcomes in medical and behavioral health care
- Increase the likelihood of moving from welfare to work
